Who, me??

Thanks to my Blogger bud Doris of 3D's Adoption Journey, I have been nominated for the Thinking Blogger Award! I am so honored I hardly know what to write!
I have been blogging about this journey for over a year now and though it was supposed to be about the adoption, it has been more about my life. My life as a mom, woman, adoptive parent, wife, emoployee, etc. This blog has served as a great tool for me to express myself. It has also been a place where I have gotten to know many other people in the IA community.

I am supposed to nominate 5 blogs. (I am trying to pick some that have not yet been nominated!)

1) Somewhere in China - C.J. Thank you for always keeping me amused. You are a dedicated blogger - I can always count on having 3 or 4 post to read when I get around to my blog hopping! Oh, and you always seem to find the darndest pictures!

2) Awaiting Ava - Melissa, I love reading all about your kids and your wonderful family life. You are a dedicated mother and pet owner - and I just love your wacky sense of humor.

3) To Tess and Back - Julie, I have been following your blog for the longest time!! I read your waiting posts, your referral posts and then all about your trip and now I just love seeing updates on Tess. It's proof to the rest of us that we actually do make it to the end of this loooong journey!

4) Waiting for Briana - Lisa, I love coming by your blog because it is always so happy and upbeat! You have a great positive outlook and great taste too! We are only a few LID days apart - who knows, maye we'll meet up in China!

5) Our Journey to Ava - Lisa, I just love the way you write about your kids in a mushy and personal way. You are an awesome mom and I can't wait for the day I see sweet Ava's face on your blog!

So there are my 5 nominations - now you guys need to nominate 5 people!!

Goodies

Look what I found in my mailbox this evening! A lovely little picture holder with a "Baby Love" caption! Hmmm ... who could this mystery sender be? Clues ... it was sent from North Conway ... hmm...I know someone who recently went there! I think I know who the sender is! Thank you very much - what a great surprise!

Oh and I have been dying to blog about this ADORABLE jean jacket that Doris picked up for Naomi on her recent travels ... :o)

week in review

Sorry I've been MIA all week, I've just been crazy busy!

We finally got around to painting the kitchen - I am in love with the color. It's by Benjamin Moore the color is called light avocado. It looks so good I could just lick the walls. These pictures don't do it justice, but take my word for it - it's lovely!

We have been having some CRAZY weather - on Monday we got a ton of snow - I had to dig out some snow pants for Francis to wear to school. On Friday is was 19 degrees and he went to school in a t-shirt! We have had some serious wind too. This is what happens when you put up your gazebo a week too early.

Last night we went over to Elisa and Jarrod's house for a traditional Chinese dinner - they made Peking duck among other delicacies. Doris and Dan made dumplings with a chicken filling that were deep fried - soooo yummy!!!I made beef and cabbage dumplings with peanut-butter sauce - It was a real feast I can tell you!!! Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so we will have to wait until Doris and Elisa post some pictures of the evening. I must also share that Dan made some kick-ass martinis for us girls - There should be an incriminating photo popping up soon.

Gotcha day

Happy 5th Gotcha day Francis! I can hardly believe that 5 years have gone by! You were so little when we got you and now you are so big. You are growing up so fast - I wish I could just slow down time. You have a strong character, you are brave and love sports. You are bossy but kind, helpful and smart. You love school, friends and hockey. Especially hockey. :) Your favorite player is Crystobal Huet from the Canadians (see, I do pay attention!). You love cats and superheros, Ninja Turtles and broccoli. You stand up for what you believe in. you are honest and considerate. You make me laugh. You amaze me with your enthusiasm for everything. Always asking questions. Always wanting to be heard. There is no doubt in my mind that we were meant to be together. And when I am wrapped in your hug, there is no place I'd rather be.

I love you.

10 years ago, on this very day, my husband and best friend proposed to me on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France at sunset. It was one of the best moments in my entire life.

I love you honey!

It's official

So it's official. 2 stinking days. sigh.
This past week has been very stressful. I don't know how many more months we have to go but I heard that the 27 - 31 are really big so I am not expecting a referral until June or July. Sigh. This messes up my plans of being home with my 2 kids this summer. I guess I'll have to look into day camp for Francis now. The most frustrating thing about this wait is that we are constantly making plans and then nothing pans out. Now what am I going to do with the size 12 month summer clothes I bought???

17 months down!!!

Today marks 17 months since our Log In Date (LID). I'm not sure weather to laugh or cry about this.

I typed "17 months gestation" and this is what I found:

"...The gestation period of a killer whale is about 17 months -- the longest known of all cetaceans..."

I feel for those killer whale mommies - 17 months is too long to wait for your baby!! Anyways, I don't want a whale I want a Chinese baby!!!

WTF??!!!

It seems that referrals are trickling in at a snails pace. It appears that the cut-off is October 26, 2005. Sigh. 2 days!??? That is all they could manage in an entire month!??!! I was prepared to see the 31st or early November! Now I don't even think we'll be next! Maybe next after next or possibly after that! This just sux!!!

Wednesday

This morning I woke up with a horrible stomach ache - I think it has something to do with all this referral stress. So I took a much needed day to recover. This is where I spent the majority of my day. In the sewing room working on Naomi's 100 wishes quilt - and it's about fricken time!
I'm no where near finished, but at least its a good start!

Yesterday on my lunch hour I gave in to some retail therapy. A white sun suit - very practial for playing in the sand and mud. The sun hat was $4 - I love a bargain ....

I have also been working hard on Naomi's room lately, I'm not ready for the final reveal, but here's a sneak peek.

Oh yeah, and I also finally finished off those hallway drapes!!!

Update

Referral update:
Ok, so the package that was mailed out last Thursday night turned out to be TA’s (Travel Approvals) not referrals, sigh. So we are back in waiting mode. Current rumors are that we will not likely see rumors until next week.
I keep hearing about how November is a "monster month" and that the CCAA might not even get through the rest of October!! Nnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

The journey

It's Sunday evening and though I did a good job of keeping myself busy over the weekend my thoughts are now drifting to the fact that we just may be getting "The Call" very soon.

I am suddenly reminded of what it has taken to get to this point. I am going to re-post one of my very first blog entries that was originally posted on MySpace in August 2005.
Here is our very long story:

Adoption #1
It all began the summer of 2000. My husband and I decided to adopt from Romania because of a documentary we saw . We filled in forms and sent in money and began our homestudy only to find out in September that the Romanian program had closed. So, we decided to try Moldova and again filled in forms, sent in more money, modified the homestudy and 3-months later Moldova closed. We then decided to switch agencies and go for Russia as I had a colleague who had a good experience (This was November 2000). We once again filled in more forms, and sent in more money and modified the homestudy. A year later we updated everything and a week after that (November 2001) we got a proposal of a beautiful boy who was 18 months old named Alexander. He was very healthy and we were told we would have him before Christmas. Well, Christmas came and went and we had a baby shower in January. Every day we called the agency and they did not reply. When we did get them they said that they were working on it. His room was ready and waiting with clothes and toys and books and every day I would watch the video of him and look at his pictures. My husband, our family and I prayed every day that the wait would end. In March I heard that 5 couples that went to the region my son was from (Kyzyl) came back without their children. I heard that the judge was making things difficult and wanted the birth mom present at the court. Another month went by and we heard that the agency director got into a huge fight with the judge of the region and that we would not be getting Alexander after all. Angry, sad and devastated I threatened the agency with a lawsuit for lying to me and keeping me in the dark about the region problems. I was immediately proposed another child named Andrei who had many more medical problems. In his video he was crying so hard he was purple. We decided he was perfect as he looked just like we felt. (I believe that adoption is a leap of faith).

In March (2002) we left for Russia and when we got to Moscow we were told that the adoption process in Russia had just changed to the two trip method. We were livid. At that time I found out that our son had been rejected by 3 other families and I began to get very nervous. We flew to Kemerovo ( Siberia ) to meet our son. He was beautiful but small and was suffering from giardia, rickets, malnutrition, etc. His arms and legs were so skinny with a huge distended belly. We accepted and signed all the release forms. We were told that we could fly home to wait for the court date or go back to Moscow to wait – we were not allowed to stay in Kemerovo to spend time with our son. So, we spent 3 weeks in Moscow in an apartment with another couple in the same situation. It was really hard but now that I look back I appreciate that I was given time to experience my son’s country and culture and I have ford memories of staying in Moscow . Finally we got a court date and flew back to Kemerovo . They day after the court day we finally got our son (April 15th, 2002) he was 14 months old. A few days later we flew home. After spending over a month in Russia we were so happy to be home! Our son (we named him Francis) caught up in all of his delays within 3 months and now I cannot imagine my life without him. He is 4 ½ years old and loves sports – I often think of the couples that refused him for whatever reasons and realize now that he was meant to be ours!! That said, I did and still do mourn the loss of Alexander even though he knows nothing of us nor that he was ever going to be adopted, I will never forget him.

Adoption #2
In June of 2004 we decided that it was time for Francis to have a little sister. The agency we had used for my son is now out of business. We had heard many positive stories about Belarus and how the children are still suffering from the effects of Chernobyl . We decided that we would adopt a sibling group of 2 girls or boy/girl. By July we were paper ready and sent in our dossier. In October there was an adoption freeze due to the president who feels that it is better for Belarus to not loose its children to foreigners – even if that means the children must live in orphanages under deplorable conditions (don’t get me started). We waited out the freeze until January – then the agency suggested that we switch to Lithuania ; a new program that they felt was going to be great. In May, after I had revised my Homestudy, forms, fees, new translation, doctors visits, etc… The agency told me that they just found out that the average wait time was going to be 3 years!!!!!!!

So here we are, August 2005 and almost paper ready for China (You should see how thick out adoption file is!!). I have heard wonderful things about the China program and I am honestly thrilled with the 6-7 month wait time (dossier and travel not included). There are many reasons that we have chosen China but the number one reason is the agency. I am impressed by the honesty and forthcoming information. The level of organization and help has made all the difference to us. I am hopeful that sometime next summer I will be announcing my travel dates!!

Thank you for reading my story. Despite our adoption journey I am still positive about adoption and will likely have a #3 story in a few years.

Wow, it's hard to read an it's our own story! So here we are are, April 2007, closer than ever to our second child. The wait times were not what I thought they would be but I still think that the China program is a great one and our agency has been truly fantastic.
